Melvin Dennis Cozby, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, in Greenville, Texas, at the age of 76. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Born on July 26, 1949, to Dennis and Louvena Cozby, Melvin grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Polytech High School. He went on to attend Abilene Christian College, where he not only excelled academically but also made his mark as a two-time state boxing champion—foreshadowing the grit and determination that would define his life.
After serving honorably as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam, Melvin knew his calling was to protect and serve. He began a lifelong career in law enforcement by joining the Dallas Police Department, where he dedicated 44 years of tireless service. Even after retiring, his passion for his work never faded. He continued to serve the community through the Garrett Police Department, stating that he just wanted to "keep his foot in the door" again—because sitting still was simply never an option for him.
Melvin was known for his larger-than-life personality—funny, outspoken, stubborn in the best way, and always true to himself. He had a heart as big as Texas and a compassion that touched everyone he met. Whether he was helping a stranger, mentoring a fellow officer, or simply showing up for his family—he showed up big.
He was the life of the party, the loudest singer on the porch, and the proudest supporter in the bleachers. He never missed a cheer, football, baseball, or volleyball game—sometimes embarrassing his kids with his enthusiastic presence, but always making sure they knew he was there.
Melvin found joy in the simple things: walking in the rain, watching war movies, sitting in coffee shops, singing along (loudly) to songs with lyrics he made up himself. He especially cherished family vacations—trips to Beavers Bend, Vegas, Choctaw—and any moment that brought his loved ones together. Above all else, he was a family man who wanted nothing more than to keep his family close, bound together by love and laughter.
His proudest accomplishments were his service as a Marine, his career with the Dallas Police Department, and the family he built and loved so deeply. He was an incredible husband to his wife, Stella Cozby, and a guiding light to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Stella Cozby; his sister Melody Allen; his brother Kevin Cozby and Jeff; his children Stacy Cozby, Tammy Greene, Tonda Stampfer, Jerry Cozby, John Segraves, and Brandon Cozby; along with 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who will carry his love forward. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Louvena Cozby —and by his beloved pet pig, Joy.
He was an amazing friend, a tireless protector, a true original. The light he brought into the world was larger than the sun itself, and though that light has dimmed, the warmth of his love and legacy will never fade.
Rest easy, Melvin. You gave this world your all—and then some.
