Karen Kaye Marker

Dec 17, 1948 — Sep 10, 2026

Mount Vernon, TX

Karen Marker lived a life filled with family, laughter, a little bit of mischief, and an unwavering love for Nebraska football. On September 10, 2026, Karen passed away peacefully, leaving behind a family who loved her dearly and countless memories that will continue to bring smiles and laughter for years to come.

Karen’s life began with a story almost too fitting for someone who would become known for her unforgettable personality. She was born to Emmett and Darlene (Hower) Marker on December 17, 1948—in a snowbank on the way to Spalding, Nebraska. From the very beginning, Karen apparently had no intention of doing things the ordinary way.

She grew up in Bartlett, Nebraska, a place that remained an important part of her life and where she later raised her three children. Karen loved her family and friends fiercely, and anyone who knew her also knew about her lifelong devotion to Nebraska football. Being a Husker fan wasn’t simply something Karen enjoyed—it was part of who she was.

Karen had a natural gift for making people laugh. Her quick wit, perfectly timed remarks, and playful spirit could brighten any room. She never had to try very hard to be funny; it simply came naturally to her. Whether through a clever quip, a good story, or simply being herself, Karen brought laughter to the people around her. Her sense of humor and unmistakable personality will be among the things her family and friends miss most.

Above all, Karen loved her family. She is survived by her three children, Shonn (Sandi) Marker of Kearney, Nebraska; Shane (Ericka) Marker of Mt. Vernon, Texas; and Stormie Shane of Wichita, Kansas.

Being a grandmother brought Karen tremendous joy. She leaves behind six grandchildren: Lauren Marker of Lincoln, Nebraska; Keagan Shane of Topeka, Kansas; Hagen Shane, Kyran Shane, and Karrington Shane of Wichita, Kansas; and Berringer Marker of Mt. Vernon, Texas. Each held a special place in her heart, and through them, Karen’s stories, humor, love, and spirit will continue for generations to come.

Karen is also survived by her siblings, JoAnn Ellmers, Pat Fletcher, Dee Marker, Leora (Tom) Johns, Rick (Linda) Marker, Ernie (Marcy) Marker, and Dean Marker; her sisters-in-law, Pauline Marker, Patty Harvey and DeAnna Marker; and her brothers-in-law, Don Fishler and Bill Cook. She also leaves behind a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish their memories of her.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Darlene Marker; her sisters, Linda Cook, Kathy Marker, Ronda Fishler, and Betty Marker; her brothers, Robert Marker, Paul Marker, Dale Marker, and Melvin Marker; her granddaughter, Wrigley Marker; and her in-laws, Edward Fletcher and Sally Marker.

While her family grieves her absence, there is comfort in knowing she is reunited with those she loved who went before her. And knowing Karen, heaven is undoubtedly a little louder and filled with a little more laughter now that she has arrived.

During her final days, Karen was surrounded by those who loved her at Mt. Vernon House, where she received compassionate care and was able to pass peacefully and pain-free. Her family will forever be grateful for the kindness, dignity, and comfort shown to Karen during her final days.

A Celebration of Karen’s Life will be held on September 18, 2026, at the Bartlett Fairgrounds. Family and friends are invited to gather together, share stories, laugh, remember, and celebrate a woman who gave them so many memories worth telling.

Karen will be deeply missed, but the best parts of her remain in the people who loved her—the stories they will continue to tell, the laughter she taught them to find even in difficult moments, and the love of family she carried throughout her life.

Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out with prayers, kindness, love, and support during this difficult time.
