Ernest Appling, age 86, of Greenville, passed away in the early morning hours Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham with his loving wife by his side. Mr. Appling was born on July 17, 1922 in Keota, Oklahoma to Lem and Dora Appling. They both preceded him in death. Ernest served his country during WWII as a member of the U.S. Army. His unit saw action in 5 major campaigns before returning stateside. He married Thela Statzer in Celeste, Texas in 1977. Mr. Appling retired from the United States Post Office after 27 years of service. Mr. Appling can be best described as a good Christian man who loved his family, bluegrass and gospel music, and loved animals and watching birds. He was a long-time member of Ardis Heights Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Bonham Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ernest was a very caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose strength and courage lasted through his final days. He had a witty sense of humor and loved his country. Ernest is survived by his wife of 31 years, Thela, one sister, Josie Burrous, two daughters, Deborah Richardson and Joyce Compton; one stepson, Joe Jacobs, eight grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mae Jean Elliot, one son Eddie Appling, two brothers, Lemuel and Everett Appling, and one sister, Georgia Brandon. Services for Mr. Appling will be held Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Peters Funeral Home in Greenville with Bro. Danny Gandy officiating. Burial will follow in Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
