Carl Clayborne Mulcahy

February 19, 1937 — September 1, 2025

Carl Mulcahy, born February 19, 1937, in Seguin, Texas, to Ira and Edna Mae Mulcahy, passed away surrounded by his family's love.

Carl grew up in Seguin, where he attended elementary and high school. He excelled in basketball throughout his school years, earning the nickname “Rupard.” Following his education in Seguin, Carl served in the US Navy, after serving his country, he attended the University of Texas, where he earned his master’s degree in physics. A proud Longhorn, he remained a loyal fan throughout his life.

Carl’s career reflected his dedication to science and engineering. He served as a research physicist with Teledyne Geotech, later as a senior research physicist with Teledyne Brown Engineering, and also as an engineer with Southern Methodist University. His work in seismology allowed him to travel the world, and he was especially proud of receiving a service medal from the Department of the Navy for his contributions on a project in Antarctica.

Carl will be remembered for his calm and intelligent presence, his integrity, and his willingness to give freely of his time and love. Outside of his professional life, he cherished spontaneous family outings, enjoyed fishing, and was known for frying prize-winning turkeys that brought joy to gatherings. His proudest accomplishments were his worldwide contributions to seismology, his service to his country, and above all, becoming a great-great-grandfather.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Luella Mulcahy; daughters, Tammy Grimes and Laurie McGrew; grandchildren, Ashley Pierce and husband Jimmy Pierce, Ahrend McGrew, Corey McGrew and wife Ariel McGrew, Megan Anderton, Laura Turner; great-grandchildren Caydence McGrew, Jimmy Pierce Jr., Beau Pierce, Jensen Sutton, Jaxon Pierce, Emersyn McGrew, Justice Sutton, Daisy Anderton; and great-great-granddaughter, Paisley Akin. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Edna Mae Mulcahy; his sister, Doris Walker; and his brothers, Edward and William Mulcahy.

Carl’s life was a testament to the values of family, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
